Dejima island

Dejima island

Located in Nagasaki, Dejima, meaning “Exit Island” was an artificial island built in 1636 to house the foreign travelers that came to Nagasaki to trade goods from their countries. It is historically significant to Japanese history because it used to be the only site through which international trade could occur within Japan. For this reason, it was preserved so that people could visit the former warehouses and merchant homes that foreign travelers worked and lived in during that period. At the Dejima Museum you can visit the exhibits of the artifacts, furnishings, and remnants of the old Dejima. It presents you with the western vibe and lifestyle present in Nagasaki at that time. It also houses souvenir shops and cafes that you can enjoy. A visit to Dejima allows you to learn about the history behind why Nagasaki has been and remains foreigner friendly.
