Gunkanjima

Gunkanjima

Gunkanjima is an island that developed and became populated because of the very profitable undersea coal mining there in 1890. The shape of the island is that of a warship so it is usually called “Gunkanjima” (Battleship Island), despite the official name of the island being “Hashima”. In 1960, the last peak of coal mining in Japan, the population of Gunkanjima was around more than 5,000 people making the population density on the island nine times higher than the city of Tokyo. In 1974, after the coal mines were closed, the entire island was abandoned. Since the island is now abandoned, it is sometimes used as a set to film movies. When you visit, you can envision the scenes from movies that have used Gunkanjima as a setting such as 007: Skyfall (2012) or Attack on Titan (2015). Today, many tourists still want to visit this place to see the deserted landscape of this island. In 2015, the island was recognized by UNESCO World Heritage Centre as one of the “Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining”. Due to the historical relevance of the island, this place has become a popular tourist destination of Nagasaki.
