Remnants of Urakami Cathedral

Remnants of Urakami Cathedral

The atomic bomb that exploded in Nagasaki on  August 9, 1945 harmed not only lives, but also many great buildings including the Urakami Cathedral which was located on a hill only 500 meters from the hypocenter of the bomb.  Only 31 years after it had been constructed, the Urakami Cathedral was completely destroyed by the explosion from the atomic bomb. In March 2001, the remnants of Urakami Cathedral were brought to the atomic bomb hypocenter as a memorial for the victims and as a symbol of the continuous advocacy in Nagasaki for peace in the world. The Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Hypocenter is only a 3-minute walk from the Peace Park  Tram Station (No. 19). It is open all year round.
