When it comes to the history of Nagasaki, the atomic bombing is what comes to the minds of most people. However, Nagasaki has a very diverse history with many events that are worth learning about. The Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture is a good starting point for your historical Nagasaki adventure. During your visit to the museum, you will learn about the history and culture of Nagasaki City, the only city with a port open to exchange with foreign countries during the Edo period. Inside the museum, there are showcases of a variety of crafts and paintings that help educate people on Nagasaki’s role in Japanese trade with foreign countries. Included in this is the history of trade between Japan and the Netherlands and Portugal on the artificial island of Dejima. Additionally, there is a workshop where you can experience the traditional crafts of Nagasaki. Here you can either watch performers and handicraft professionals or try to make some of the handicrafts yourself. There is also a reading room, souvenir shop, and a restaurant. The admission fee is 630 yen for adults and 310 yen for children. The exhibition area and souvenir shop operating from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with the last admission being 4:30 p.m. The museum is closed every 3rd Monday of each month.
